About OPEN 3P

Open 3P is an open standard specifically designed for the packaging the packaging value chain

It is developed and maintained by Open Data Manchester CIC, a not-for-profit organization specializing in responsible data practices, is free to use and is governed for the whole industry by a board of industry experts.

Initially created as part of the Plastic Packaging Portal (PPP) Project, Open 3P received encouragement from organisations working with different packaging materials to expand the standard. In response, Innovate UK funded a consortium led by Dsposal in partnership with Open Data Manchester CIC, OPRL, Recoup and Ecosurety, to further develop Open 3P. The result is Version 2.0, released in May 2023, which covers all types of packaging. Open 3P sets the stage for systemic change in the packaging value chain, fostering sustainable and efficient practices and ensuring compliance with existing and upcoming regulations.

The development of Open 3P involved stakeholders from across the packaging ecosystem, with over 200 individuals from 120 organisations contributing their insights, expertise, and support. This collaboration shaped the data standard to accurately reflect the realities of the packaging industry today and the aspirations of stakeholders for a data-enabled future.

Trust is the cornerstone of Open 3P's success

The standard is governed by a board of stakeholders from the industry, ensuring that it represents the interests of all stakeholders in a neutral and independent manner. The Standard Custodian Board, responsible for maintaining trust, ensures that the standard is developed for all and designates Open Data Manchester CIC as the Data Standard Holding Body. This designation empowers Open Data Manchester CIC to handle the ongoing maintenance, development, and support of the standard for the benefit of all stakeholders.
